Why we chose this fan

We wanted strong airflow in the hall bathroom without the roar of our old fan. The Panasonic WhisperChoice RG-C811A can be set to 80 or 110 CFM, and its low published sound rating made it stand out while I was comparing models.

We chose to try it in our personal home first. Real daily use here will help me decide whether I’d install the same model at Dragonfly Cottage.

The retrofit took more than two hours

The online installation videos made the process look fairly straightforward. Our house added its own complications. The available stud space affected the fit, my husband had to make a trip into the attic, and the entire job took at least two hours.

Removing the old housing and working around the existing opening sent insulation and debris all over the bathroom. Cleanup became a project of its own. There was a lot of frustration along the way, and this experience gave me a much more realistic picture of what a retrofit can involve.

The five-second startup surprised us

When we first flipped the switch, the fan seemed to sit quietly for a little over five full seconds before it came up to speed and we could hear that it was running. We wondered immediately whether something was wrong.

Panasonic uses a DC motor and SmartFlow technology in this model, and slow ramp-up behavior is reported with other Panasonic Whisper fans. Based on the documentation and owner experiences I found, our five-second delay appears consistent with the way this type of fan starts. I’ll keep watching it and would contact Panasonic if the delay grows longer or the fan stops reaching full speed.

It’s remarkably quiet

Once it reaches speed, this fan is very quiet. The difference from the old fan is striking. We can tell that it’s running, and the sound stays soft enough to leave it on comfortably.

The airflow feels strong

Airflow is the technical term for what we’re noticing. In everyday use, it feels like strong suction at the grille. The fan moves air forcefully while staying unusually quiet, which is the combination I was hoping for.

My early verdict

The finished result delivers the two things that mattered most to me: strong airflow and very little noise. The two-hour installation, attic work and extensive cleanup are important parts of the story for anyone considering the same retrofit.

I want to live with it through regular showers and watch how quickly it clears the room before making the final decision for Dragonfly Cottage. So far, its performance after startup is impressive.
